Last year, Doug Malewicki became the oldest person to run this still very young race. He completed the GORE-TEX™ TransRockies Run at the fine age of 69 running with his partner Steve Harvey, 64, racing as the California Old Goats. Well after some hemming and hawing, they have made the decision to come back and run it again.
In the meantime, there’s a little matter of his 70th birthday to be celebrated, and in true Old Goat style, he’s going to do it out on the trails. His 70th birthday falls on Saturday March 28, 2009, which just happens to coincide with the Old Goats 50 mile trail race in the Cleveland National Forest. At 70, he’s not going to run 50 miles of mountains in one day, but he’s going to run 70 miles in three days by running 20 miles on Friday; 30 on race day; and a final 20 on Sunday to reach the 70 total. All the miles will be on the Old Goats 50 mile course. The 70 miles will also include over 14,000 feet of climbing.
Doug is using the70at70 run to raise money for some of his favourite charities. You can get more information on the run and the charities at http://www.californiaoldgoats.com/70at70Intro.htm.
Here’s wishing Doug a happy birthday and good luck during the run from everyone in the TransRockies family.
