While migrating north from the arid High Desert landscapes to the verdant high alpine ecosystems of Colorado’s Rocky Mountains, Trail Striders have revitalized after collectively feeding on cactus concoctions and tacos. In this segment, Trail Striders are captured tending to self-care and healing rituals akin to the Great Northern Loon, which continually extends and stretches its muscles and wings to recover after a long journey, after immersing in water. It is unclear whether other distinctive grooming and preening actions displayed are common among all members of the flock, or if certain idiosyncratic behaviors are solely exhibited by alphas and odd ducks. Regardless, grooming and healing appear to be essential to the successful migration, which culminates in Beaver Creek.
