GORE-TEX™ TransRockies Run Backgrounder

The GORE-TEX™ TransRockies Run will be completed in six daily stages between Aug. 25 and Aug. 30, 2008. Racers will be welcomed at each new finish line with a posh tent city, hot showers, and gourmet whole foods to help them recover for the next day’s run.

Traditionally, long-distance trail runs pit individual athletes against one another. That’s not the case with the GORE-TEX™ TransRockies Run. Teams of two must remain together throughout the competition, yielding a running experience new to the United States that is audacious in scope and sublime in its scenery.

Normally, when a run is over, participants simply go home. In this regard, the GORE-TEX™ TransRockies Run is unique. Since the event rolls out over a full week, and athletes camp together in tent cities, they have unlimited time to share their experiences of running the Colorado Rockies. The result is a community built on shared challenges, a colloquy that pairs luxury with hardship.

Because of its six-stage format, the GORE-TEX™ TransRockies Run is not just for elite endurance trail runners. Nordic walkers, adventure racers and fast-paced hikers are all likely capable of completing each day’s stage with a smile on their face.

GORE-TEX already has a successful track record of presenting world-class, multi-day events. The GORE-TEX TransAlpine Run, on which the TransRockies Run is loosely based, drew nearly 200 participants in 2006. Last year’s inaugural GORE-TEX™ TransRockies Run spurred the popularity of this adventure and this year’s run will attract more than double the participants.

This grand tour of the Colorado Rockies, covering 112 miles from Buena Vista to Beaver Creek, will be ablaze with late summer colors, adding vibrant views to what already qualifies as some of the best scenery in North America.

While most participants may not have their eye on a win, some certainly will. A combined prize purse of $20,000 will go to top teams in four categories: Men, Women, Mixed, and Men 80+, which is for teams of men whose combined age is 80 or higher. This year, the event will host runners from Germany, France, Argentina, South Africa, Ireland, England, and Canada.
